Direct answer. For a first trip to Beijing, stay centrally: Wangfujing or Nanluoguxiang for walking access to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, or Houhai and Qianmen for hutongs and evening food. Pick Sanlitun or Guomao in Chaoyang if you want modern hotels, nightlife and business access.
Beijing is not a city where “central” and “convenient” are the same thing. The distances are large — the historic core, the business district and both airports sit in different corners of the municipality — and one wrong choice turns a five-minute walk into a forty-minute commute. Fix these four inputs before you look at a single hotel:

Two further points that many guides skip: Beijing’s sights are spread out (the Forbidden City and the Great Wall are a day apart, not a morning apart), and the two airports are on opposite sides of the municipality. Those two facts decide more than any star rating.
PEK is the closer airport to the historic centre and is served by the Capital Airport Express (首都机场线), which runs Beixinqiao — Dongzhimen — Sanyuanqiao — Terminal 3 — Terminal 2, with trains roughly every 10 minutes. The fare is a flat CNY 25 per single journey; because it is a designated airport line it is priced outside the normal distance-based scheme. The operator’s ticket rules allow a combined single ticket covering both the airport line and the onward city-network leg, used at the interchange station you select when buying — on this line Beixinqiao, Dongzhimen or Sanyuanqiao. Buying that combined ticket at the start is what avoids a second queue at the interchange.
Practical consequence: if you land at PEK, an address near Dongzhimen, Sanyuanqiao or Beixinqiao converts a long arrival into a short one — you ride the express to the interchange, then take one more hop. For the full airport-to-city breakdown, see our Beijing airport to city transfer guide.
PKX opened on 25 September 2019 and is served by the Daxing Airport Express, whose first phase runs Caoqiao — Daxing Airport with a travel time of about 19 minutes. The Beijing-Xiongan Intercity Railway also links the airport to Beijing West Railway Station in around 20 minutes, which is the better option if your onward plan involves high-speed rail.
Practical consequence: landing at PKX pushes you toward the southern and central-south parts of the city, or toward Beijing West for a rail connection. A hotel booked in the far northeast becomes a cross-city trip.
Beijing Subway publishes four ways to buy a ticket:
Tap to Ride — contactless payment straight at the gate — is available on all 27 subway lines, including the two airport lines, and supports overseas-issued Visa and Mastercard as well as UnionPay QuickPass cards. Some card types are explicitly not yet supported; check the official page before you rely on it as your only method.
Network and interchange details change as new lines open. Always confirm your route on the official Beijing Subway map rather than a printed guide.

Choosing between them:
The legal position is clear and worth knowing. Article 39 of China’s Exit and Entry Administration Law provides that when a foreigner stays at a hotel in China, the hotel must handle accommodation registration under the public-security rules for the hotel industry and report the foreign guest’s registration information to the local public security organ. If you stay anywhere other than a hotel — a friend’s flat, a serviced apartment without hotel licensing — you or your host must register with the local public security organ within 24 hours of moving in.
The practical position is less tidy. Some properties are still unfamiliar with registering foreign passports, and a minority may decline a booking for that reason. This is a service-maturity issue rather than a rule that says certain hotels are off-limits, and the picture varies by property and by city. The reliable move is the boring one:

Central Dongcheng around Wangfujing or Nanluoguxiang puts you within walking distance of the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, with the metro and the Capital Airport Express interchange at Dongzhimen and Beixinqiao. Houhai and Qianmen suit travellers who want hutongs and evening food; Sanlitun and Guomao in Chaoyang suit modern hotels, nightlife and business.
Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) in the northeast is closer to the historic centre and is served by the Capital Airport Express, a fixed CNY 25 line stopping at Beixinqiao, Dongzhimen, Sanyuanqiao and Terminals 3 and 2. Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) in the south is served by the Daxing Airport Express, which runs to Caoqiao in about 19 minutes; the Beijing-Xiongan Intercity Railway links it to Beijing West Railway Station in around 20 minutes.
The city rail network, excluding the two airport express lines, uses a distance-based fare: CNY 3 up to 6 km, CNY 4 from 6 to 12 km, CNY 5 from 12 to 22 km and CNY 6 from 22 to 32 km, with CNY 1 added for every further 20 km and no maximum fare cap. The Capital Airport Express is charged separately at a fixed CNY 25.
Under Article 39 of China’s Exit and Entry Administration Law, a hotel must complete accommodation registration for a foreign guest and report that information to the local public security organ; guests staying anywhere other than a hotel must register with the local public security organ within 24 hours of moving in. In practice a small number of properties are still unfamiliar with foreign passports, so confirm directly with the hotel before you pay.
Beijing Subway lists four main options: a Beijing Pass smart card sold at the international arrival halls of Beijing’s airports, a metro QR code inside Alipay, tickets from the vending machines in every station, and the manned ticket counter. Contactless Tap to Ride is available on all 27 subway lines including the two airport lines and accepts overseas-issued Visa and Mastercard and UnionPay QuickPass cards.
